Four Decades of Tradition in the Art of the Sea…

Perama has long been recognized as one of the most important ship repair and shipbuilding hubs in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is within this environment that the history of Atsalakis Shipyard was shaped. The company’s activity began in the early 1990s, at the very site where the historic Vernicos Shipyard had operated since the 1950s — a shipyard established through Marshall Plan funding, which played a significant role in the development of Greek shipbuilding expertise.

The foundation and independent course of the Shipyard are closely connected to Georgios Atsalakis, who, drawing on his experience in ship repair operations, recognized the growth potential of an independent shipyard facility in Perama. In 2003, he proceeded with the acquisition of the premises and laid the foundations of the present-day company.

From its earliest years of operation, the Shipyard distinguished itself through the quality of its constructions, consistency, technical precision, highly skilled workforce, and its ability to manage demanding projects across different vessel categories.

In 2010, management passed to the second generation, under the leadership of Dimitrios Atsalakis. This new management era was marked by organizational modernization, investments in equipment and infrastructure, improvements in quality control and operational procedures, and the expansion of activities into larger and specialized vessel projects. Through this development, the Shipyard evolved into a modern technical organization with systematic operations and recognized reliability.

Over more than 30 years of activity, Atsalakis Shipyard has completed projects across a wide range of vessels, including passenger and vehicle ferries (conventional & RO/RO), general cargo ships, tugboats, rescue and pilot boats, cruise tenders, yachts and mega yachts, as well as auxiliary port vessels.

Two vessels stand as major milestones in the Shipyard’s history. The construction of the F/B Northern Adventure (ex Sonia), the largest enclosed-type passenger and vehicle ferry ever built in Perama, measuring 117 meters in length and 20 meters in width, and the construction of the “SUPERCAT Haroula,” launched on September 30, 1995. These projects highlighted both the technical expertise and the organizational capabilities of Atsalakis Shipyard.

Issue No. 263 of the industry magazine ELNAVI (November 1995) featured a special tribute with extensive coverage of the “SUPERCAT Haroula.”

Throughout its entire operation, the Shipyard has consistently followed an investment-oriented strategy, focusing on the renewal of electromechanical equipment, the upgrade of fire protection and energy systems, the organization of onshore operational areas, the creation of specialized workshops and storage facilities, the acquisition of heavy-duty lifting machinery, and the implementation of modern steelwork and mechanical engineering methods.

This continuous development led to the creation of a technically mature and operationally flexible shipyard, capable of handling everything from maintenance works to complex vessel conversions.

Responding to the rapid growth of the yachting market in the Eastern Mediterranean, Atsalakis Shipyard launched an extensive infrastructure and equipment upgrade program in the spring of 2024, financed through its own capital, aimed at servicing motor and sailing yachts. This investment program included, among others, the acquisition of the ASCOM BHT 320T Travel Lift, the construction of a 40m x 9.5m dry dock cradle, the organization of dedicated yacht service areas, and the strengthening of its workforce with specialized technicians. The investment in the 320T Travel Lift allows for the safe lifting of vessels weighing up to 320 tons.

In 2025, the Shipyard officially began systematically serving the yacht and luxury yacht sector, with the goal of delivering high-standard services to demanding clients.

Today, after nearly four decades of continuous operation, Atsalakis Shipyard is entering a new phase of development as a technically advanced and organizationally mature facility, fully capable of meeting the present and future demands of the maritime industry.

For us, our historical journey is not simply a record of the past… It is the foundation upon which we build our future. Throughout our path of evolution, our history will always remain the compass guiding us toward new horizons of growth.
